Design Build project for ANP Waste Water System Upgrades Kabul Police Academy, Kabul, Afghanistan (KPA)/2009 - (W917PM-09-R-0073)

  • Client: US Army Corps of Engineers
  • Prime: Omran Holding
  • Sub Contractor: GreenTech

The work includes a new centralized wastewater treatment system including new gravity sanitary sewer mains and branches, lift stations, force mains, manholes, waste water treatment plant sludge filter press and an effluent disposal system.

A 500 gallon tank was constructed adjacent to the effluent disposal outfall to capture treated waste water. A submersible pump provides water to yard hydrant for plant water wash down and tanker fill after sand filtration.

Narrative

Sanitary Sewer

The existing sanitary sewer system consists of 25 septic / holding tanks scattered throughout the compound. It required that all the sanitary sewers connect into a central wastewater treatment plant.

  • Design the sanitary sewer collection system using approved topographic and geotechnical field survey
  • Main collection sewers follow the most feasible routes to the point of discharge to the WWTP.
  • The sewer collection system designed to accommodate the initial peak flow
  • The wastewater treatment system is aerated activated sludge type, specifically known as “Completed Mix/ Extended Aeration Activated Sludge “,
  • The system designed for treating a total of 196,000 gallons per day of 400 mg/l-BOD5; 400 mg/l TSS domestic sewage based on composite sewage samples of the average daily flow.
  • The plant designed to handle average daily flows fluctuating over the range of 60% to 100% of design flow and peak hourly flow rates not to exceed 200% of design flow, with an effluent quality of 30 mg/l-BOD5; 30 mg/l TSS.
  • The plant consists of a complete concentric circular concrete tank and the necessary division walls to insure process operation.
