The project consists of the design and construction of a Package Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and an improvement to drinking water facilities at the Regional Headquarters/ANCOP Mazar-E-Sharif, Balkh, Afghanistan. This project is defined as the provision of design, material, labor, and equipment to construct water distribution piping, pumps, manholes, sewer lines, wastewater treatment facilities and other infrastructure. The sanitary sewer collection and treatment system of this project was supposed to be connected to the existing utility or provide a new system to support the expected population capacity. The new sanitary sewer collection system was consisting of gravity sewer pipe network and accessories such as manholes, cleanouts, and building service connections. The project was also including of constructing a new WTP facility to meet the capacity for a total 1,600 personnel.

Design Parameters for the WWTP

Influent Characteristics of Wastewater:

BOD5 – 400 mg/L or based on 0.09 kilograms (0.20 pounds) per person per day whichever is greater loading

  • TSS –400 mg/L
  • TKN – 80 mg/L
  • Fecal Coliform – 108 MPN /100 mL

 

Effluent Criteria Limitations for Direct Surface Water Discharge:

  • BOD5
  • The 30-day average will not exceed 30 mg/L.
  • The 7-day average will not exceed 45 mg/L.
  • CBOD5 may be substituted for BOD5. In those cases the following limits will apply:
  • 30-day average will not exceed 25 mg/L.
  • The 7-day average will not exceed 40 mg/L.
